Common Screen Issues

MacBook screens can develop various issues over time. Understanding the symptoms helps identify whether you need a repair and what type of repair is required.

Flickering Screen

Screen flickering can be caused by software issues (try resetting NVRAM/PRAM), a failing display cable, GPU (graphics processor) problems, or a failing display panel. Try these steps: Reset NVRAM (restart and hold Option+Command+P+R), update macOS, and disable automatic graphics switching in System Preferences if available.

Lines on Display

Vertical or horizontal lines typically indicate: display panel damage, display cable fault (especially if lines change when opening/closing lid), or GPU failure. If lines change when you slightly flex the display or change the lid angle, it is likely a cable issue. Permanent lines usually indicate panel damage.

Black Screen

A completely black screen while the MacBook is running could be caused by display failure, backlight failure, display cable disconnection, or logic board issues. Try connecting to an external monitor to determine if the issue is with the display or the logic board.

Physical Damage

Cracked screens, pressure marks, and impact damage require display replacement. Do not attempt to use a cracked display as glass fragments can cause injury and further damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a cracked MacBook screen be repaired without replacement?

No, cracked displays require full screen assembly replacement. The glass is bonded to the display panel and cannot be separated without damaging it.

Why does my screen have a pink or green tint?

Colour tints can indicate a failing display, cable issues, or GPU problems. This often worsens over time and typically requires professional diagnosis.
