About This Service

Keyboard problems are among the most frustrating MacBook issues, affecting your ability to work productively. Whether you have the infamous butterfly keyboard with its notorious reliability issues, or a newer scissor-switch Magic Keyboard, we can repair or replace your keyboard and restore full functionality. For MacBooks with butterfly keyboards (2015-2019 models), we can often replace individual key mechanisms without replacing the entire top case. For more severe damage or newer models, we replace the complete keyboard assembly to ensure perfect operation of every key. Our keyboard replacements include full testing of every key, backlight functionality, and Touch ID where applicable.

The butterfly keyboard used in MacBook Pro (2016-2019) and MacBook (2015-2017) models was prone to failure from dust and debris. If your MacBook is within Apple's Keyboard Service Program eligibility period, we can advise on the best repair option. For newer MacBooks with scissor-switch keyboards, issues are much less common but can still occur from liquid damage or physical impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can individual MacBook keys be repaired?

On butterfly keyboards (2016-2019 models), individual key mechanism replacement is sometimes possible. On scissor-switch keyboards, we can often replace individual key caps. However, full keyboard replacement is often the most reliable and cost-effective long-term solution.

Will keyboard replacement affect Touch ID?

No, Touch ID functionality is preserved during keyboard replacement as the Touch ID sensor is a separate component. We test Touch ID after every keyboard repair to ensure it works correctly with your fingerprint.

How long does a MacBook keyboard replacement take?

Keyboard replacements typically take 2-4 working days. Some models require top case replacement which involves more extensive work, but the quality of repair is worth the additional time.

Why do MacBook butterfly keyboards fail?

Butterfly keyboards have very thin key mechanisms that can be jammed by tiny particles of dust or debris. Apple has since returned to scissor-switch mechanisms in all current MacBooks, which are more reliable.
